Geological Remote Sensing Group – GRSG

The Geological Remote Sensing Group (GRSG) has announced this year’s recipients of their Annual Student Awards. Each winner will receive £1,000 each to support their studies and research work and an invitation to the 2018 Annual Conference in London to present their winning papers.

GRSG Chairman, Charlotte Bishop explains the background to the Group’s awards; “Students are a big part of the GRSG; they are the future of all geological-based industries and for many years we have actively supported them in as many ways as we can. This is the second year that we have awarded the increased sum of £1000 and it is really gratifying to know that we can support their PhD projects”.

As with all years of the competition, applications were sent in from further education establishments located all around the world which ensured that the committee’s decisions were as close as always.

PhD Awards:

Jesse Zondervan (PhD)

University of Plymouth – Quantifying landscape response to tectonics and climate using river terraces in the Atlas Mountains, central Morocco

Paolo Caporossi (PhD)

University of Rome – Development and application of Image Processing methodologies for landslide monitoring.

Daithí Maguire (PhD)

University of Ireland Galway – The application of satellite-borne remote sensors for monitoring coastal erosion and ecosystems in Ireland.

Charlotte Bishop again; “I am delighted for Jesse, Paolo and Daithi and congratulate them all on their awards. I hope they will be able to join us in London for the annual conference and explain their work to the assembled geology professionals, in more detail.”
