The British Geological Survey (BGS) is one of the world’s leading and forward thinking geological science institutes with a focus on both public good science for government and geoscientific research to understand earth and environmental processes. A vacancy has arisen for a Remote Sensing Geoscientist based at their headquarters in Keyworth, Nottingham.

With a first degree (or equivalent) in Earth or Physical science and a PhD (or MSc with significant experience) in Earth Observation (or similar), you will play a key role in maintaining and augmenting the remote sensing capabilities of the Earth & Planetary Observation & Monitoring Team.

Your duties will include:

  • Evaluating new sensor technologies and identifying their relevance to BGS research, and developing new methodologies for processing and extracting information from a variety of Earth Observation (EO) datasets for a range of geoscience applications.
  • Leading on the development and implementation of collaborative research objectives, projects and proposals within the BGS strategic aims.
  • Generating income by developing and winning support for innovative research proposals and funding bids.
  • Building relationships and collaborating actively with internal and external contacts to complete research projects and to advance the discipline.
  • Disseminating results via peer review publications, conference presentations and other appropriate media.

You should have excellent communication skills, both oral and written. The post will involve working with a variety of teams, therefore you must be able to demonstrate the ability to lead teams and to participate as a team member. To attract a salary at the higher end of the advertised range (see below), in addition to the above, you will have extensive experience in delivering research results and a proven track record of winning external income and managing the associated research projects.

Depending on qualifications and experience, full time starting salary will be £28,200 per annum to £38,254 per annum.
